The Musikerinitiative Bremen is celebrating it 50th anniversary! After the start of the festival in the Städtische Galerie Bremen (Thu., Aug. 28) and the MIB-Saal (Fri., Aug. 29), the weekend at the Schwankhalle will be staged entirely under the banner of musical diversity. On Sat., Aug. 30, five concerts offer the opportunity to experience the whole range of contemporary jazz: The piano virtuoso Svetlana Marinchenko and her trio SVM3 fathom the boundaries of music. The KIND sextet playfully raises the question of whether jazz is necessarily bourgeois entertainment or if it cannot instead trigger existential debates. 25-year-old Louise Knobil is at the center of KNOBIL. With contrabass and voice, she shares her musical diary between polyamory, sleep deprivation and pesto recipes. The Sheen Trio of the Iranian clarinetist Shabnam Parvaresh shapes its music like a mythical means of transportation—reveling and sensual. The Black Mirror Ensemble from Bremen concludes the evening with unconventional jazz, setting digitization, politics and science fiction to music with dystopian charm.

On Sun., Aug. 31, the workshop Affobakka Jazzalocca invites children and their families to a join-in concert at Peter-Zadek-Platz. At the end of the festival, 20 MIB musicians will give a jubilee concert: “50 Years of MIB – On The Fly”—a three-hour concert evening ranging from a duo to the large ensemble, from acoustic to electric, from time to free.
