Liew Jin Pin:
Solotus –
Lotus Fight Club
Dance Solo
Part of SOLO – Festival für künstlerische Alleingänge
»Solotus« is a solo version of Raymond Liew Jin Pins »Lotus Fight Club«. Raymond refers to a colonial-era sodomy law, which is still enforced in Malaysia and includes physical punishment by whipping. He remotely confronts the local political and religious restrictions, taboos and censorship from his distant perspective as gay immigrants in Germany. »Solotus« is an invitation to follow Raymond on a borderline walk between violence and pleasure, punishment and joy. Through the re-enactment of traditional dances such as the Chinese ribbon dance, symbols and movements are placed in a new light, in which ribbons become whips and lashes are full of pleasure. As a ritual of resistance and healing, the whip dance itself becomes an act of rebellion.
Raymond Liew Jin Pin (he/him) is a Malaysian choreographer and performer working in Germany. His work often explores his diverse dance training, ranging from traditional to contemporary dance. This led him to his research on how the queer SoutheastAsian diaspora moves and he developed »Maria Cencaru: A Southeast Asian Cis-Sis Reunion« ↗. Together with his partner Jascha Viehstädt, he works on choreographic projects such as »1000 Kisses«.
