Smith-McDowell:
In the Black
Dance performance with audio description
In English
How do stereotypes and discrimination impact a developing being? In what ways is your mind’s development influenced by constantly feeling unseen or like an outsider in a Western society? Hidden in the Black, in the Black of their skin, in the Black of space around them and in the Black of time. A transformation occurs on stage: a dance solo that embodies evolution through innocence and rage, to arrive at a sense of pride. Dance is used to find a personal expression of being Black. Within the black box of the theatre, the audience witnesses an empowerment and a moment of screaming loud in the Black
Monique Smith-McDowell lives in Hamburg and is a choreographer and performer. She is a graduate of the London Contemporary Dance School and has worked with the Richard Alston Dance Company, Michael Turinsky, Ursina Tossi, and others. Through her work, Monique aims to address socio-political issues while giving space to the perspectives of marginalized people. In theater, she seeks to tell a story and move the audience by creating an emotional atmosphere that challenges boundaries, barriers, and perspectives both inside and outside the theater doors.
